David Walker, Mirror sports editor

Welcome to the fourth Mirror Pride of Sport Awards in partnership with TSB.

Our awards are getting better with each passing year and I can assure you that you will be stunned by some of the achievements of the people we salute.

The vision we share with our partners TSB is predominantly to honour the unknown and the unsung of sport. The people who actually make sport work at a local level.

The nominations we receive are heart-warming and always provoke intense debate among our judging panel. Former judges and elite athletes such as Rebecca Adlington and Martin Offiah have pointed out that without the unknown heroes behind the scenes, we would never witness the moments of glory on the international sporting stage.

We do also award famous sports people who demonstrate incredible talent and earn deserved status as serial winners at world class levels in their respective sports.  2016 was an epic time for British sport in an Olympic and Paralympic year and a season when we saw the biggest shock winners of football’s Premier League for decades.

I believe you will continue to be inspired by the commitment, tenacity and bravery of the Pride of Sport heroes to come in 2017.
