They say fairy tales no longer happen in a football era dominated by bumper salaries and TV’s billions. Pre-season relegation favourites Leicester City were the ultimate proof this doesn’t have to be the case.
A great start set them on their way and once they were out in front none of the giants of English football could catch them, despite almost all pundits and fans confidently declaring that this particular dream would end before the season was out.
Gary Lineker said he would present Match of the Day in his pants if his former club won the title. That he sat there in August in nothing but his smalls was perhaps the crowning glory of a story that will be told for the next 100 years.
As Leicester fans and neutrals alike celebrated their 5,000-1 triumph, it gave hope to all fans of so-called lesser clubs that nothing is impossible in sport.
And for that reason alone, Leicester’s incredible title win will go down as one of the greatest moments in any sport of all time.
