Giarnni Regini-Moran

Until Louis Smith won a bronze in Beijing in 2008, no British male gymnast had found himself on an Olympic podium since 1928 – now Regini-Moran is out to ensure that the country’s golden gymnastics era continues.

Moran only turned 16 in August but he’s already a seasoned campaigner on the international stage and has enjoyed a 2014 he’ll never forget.

He began his golden trail back in March when he won the British under-16 all-round title at the 2014 British Championships in Liverpool. “I knew I could push for medals here but to take the gold is amazing,” he said after claiming the title. He didn’t know it at the time, but there would be plenty more silverware to follow.

From Merseyside, Regini-Moran travelled to Sofia to compete in the European Junior Championships - an event which confirmed Great Britain’s astonishing gymnastics resurgence.

The then 15-year-old won two gold’s in the team and the floor events, and then added a silver in the vault as Great Britain finished second the medal table behind Russia.

That success, though, merely proved a warm-up to a truly remarkable 2014 Summer Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China. Regini-Moran won gold in the all-round, floor and vault before adding a double bronze in the parallel bars and horizontal bar.

“I can’t believe I’ve gone and won the Youth Olympic Games, it’s an amazing achievement,” he said.

There is surely plenty more to come.
